A while ago, I saw this tweet:
It mentions LISP (nowadays mostly called Lisp), likely because their derivatives like Scheme and Clojure still actively mention their ancestry.
ALGOL is not in the list, but has had so much influence on modern programming. So here the thread that followed:
- [WayBack] Jeroen Pluimers on Twitter: “Most of these have been influenced by ALGOL.
Be sure to watch some of the talks by @KevlinHenney, like youtu.be/SFv8Wm2HdNM
Most of these cover how we software developers can learn from the past.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALGOL” - [WayBack] John Drake on Twitter: “Speaking of which, they left out Pascal.… “
- [WayBack] Jeroen Pluimers on Twitter: “You are right.
Lot’s of people know the name. Many people have an opinion on it.
Very few realise the ancestry and how much influence it has had on for instance on .NET: blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/brada/2004/09/15/thoughts-from-borcon04
I think ALGOL has had a far greater influence on current programming languages.”
